Posting an Insurance Payment

Topic Progress:

Accurately entering insurance payments is crucial for your practice. For example, it’s essential to enter the amounts correctly, apply the payments to the correct procedures and providers, apply the deductibles properly, and enter adjustments as needed. Additional Tips

  • Dentrix includes an option to automatically posts a zero-amount payment when the claim does not have an assignment of benefits. To activate this option, open the Ledger and click File > Insurance Payment Setup > Prompt to close claims without assignment of benefits.
  • The steps for posting a payment to a primary or secondary claim are the same. Simply double-click the claim and follow the same procedures to post payments.
  • Use the Update Payment Table option only when the payment amount applies to ALL patients covered by that plan. In situations where the insurance portion is different from the payment amount, because money is being withheld toward a deductible or a patient has exceeded their maximum benefit, you should NOT update the payment table.
  • You can delete a posted insurance payment if it has not been moved into history. To do so, read Deleting Insurance Payments in Dentrix Help.
  • In the Total Insurance Payment dialog box, enter the Payment Type and it’s corresponding information, adjust the provider amounts (as needed), and click OK/Post.
  • To learn more about posting an insurance payment, read Posting Dental Insurance Payments, and Posting Itemized Insurance Payments in Dentrix Help.

Check Your Knowledge

If you have access to Dentrix, check your knowledge with this exercise.

  1. Switch to the Dentrix demo database. (Skip this step if you are using the Dentrix Learning Edition software.)
  2. Since the sample database does not have any patients with outstanding insurance claims, you need to create one. Create an insurance claim for Mary Brown for procedure D2750 on tooth #7.
  3. Use the following information to post an insurance payment for Mary’s claim:
    • Itemize by Procedure
    • Insurance will pay $447.50
    • Check #8852
    • $50 applied to standard deductible
