Assigning Insurance to Dependents When the Subscriber is Not Covered

Topic Progress:

In some situations, you’ll encounter plans that cover dependent family members, but not the subscriber. Similarly, you may also encounter a plan that assigns a unique subscriber ID number for each family member.

Examples of these plans might include:

  • Plans where the dependent receives different benefits than the subscriber
  • A tiered benefits plan, where family members receive different benefits based on their length of involvement with the plan
  • Government funded plans for children where parents or guardians are not covered

This can be accomplished by assigning the insurance to the subscriber, as if that individual were covered. Next, share the insurance plan with the dependent(s). Finally, remove the plan from the subscriber’s file.

Watch this video to see how to assign an insurance plan when the subscriber is not a covered by the same plan (Duration 0:48).

Additional Information:

  • When assigning the plan to the subscriber, it does not matter if you enter the plan as the primary or secondary insurance.
