Editing or Deleting a Procedure in the Chart

Topic Progress:

Procedures are sometimes mistakenly entered into a patient’s chart, such as a filling that was completed on tooth 13 but mistakenly entered on tooth 14. The Patient Chart is a clinical record of patient care and must be completely accurate. If you discover a mistake, you can edit or delete the procedure, as long as it has not been moved into history.

Watch this video to learn how to edit or delete a procedure in the Patient Chart. (Duration 0:38)

Additional Tips

  • To change a provider for a completed procedure, double-click the procedure in the Progress Notes panel, click the provider search button, and select the correct provider. Then, click OK.
  • To delete multiple procedures in the Progress Notes panel, press the Ctrl key as you select each procedure; then, right-click and select Delete (or, click the Delete button in the panel’s toolbar).
  • You cannot edit or delete procedures that have been moved into history. However, you can remove procedures in history from the patient’s charts by invalidating the procedures.
  • You cannot edit procedures attached to an insurance claim until you first delete the claim. For information on deleting insurance claims, read Deleting Primary Claims and Deleting Secondary Claims in Dentrix Help.
  • To learn more about editing or deleting a procedure in the Chart, read Editing Treatment and Deleting Completed Procedures in Dentrix Help.

Check Your Knowledge

If you have access to Dentrix, check your knowledge with this exercise.

  1. Switch to the Dentrix demo database.
(Skip this step if you are using the Dentrix Learning Edition software.)
  2. Select Carol Little in the Patient Chart.
  3. Her procedure (D3330) was completed on tooth #18 instead of #19, as it appears on the Chart. Edit the procedure to make it accurate.
  4. Also, the treatment-planned crown (D2750) should be on tooth #18 instead of #19 — make this change too.
  5. Now, change the provider on both procedures from DDS1 to DDS2.
