Charting a Supernumerary Tooth

Topic Progress:

Occasionally patients may come to your office with more than the customary 32 teeth. By default, Dentrix only charts 32 teeth; however, you can add “supernumerary” teeth to a patient’s chart and post procedures for them.

Additional Tips

  • Supernumerary teeth are extra teeth, which are charted outside of the traditional teeth numbering system. According to the ADA, permanent supernumerary teeth are coded by adding “50” to the nearest standard tooth number (e.g., a supernumerary tooth nearest to tooth 5 is labeled 55). Primary supernumerary teeth are coded by adding the letter “S” to the nearest standard tooth letter (e.g., a supernumerary tooth nearest to tooth G is labeled GS).
  • When you chart a supernumerary tooth, it does not visually appear in the patient’s Graphic Chart; however, it does appear in the Progress Notes and Treatment Planner.
  • To learn more about charting a supernumerary tooth, read Posting Procedures in Dentrix Help.

(Skip this step if you are using the Dentrix Learning Edition software.)
  2. Treatment-plan an extraction (D7220) of a supernumerary tooth near tooth 22, for patient Carl Winters.
