Creating Prescriptions

Topic Progress:

After specific dental procedures, it’s often necessary for providers to prescribe pain medication or antibiotics for patients. The Dentrix Prescriptions module helps you quickly create prescriptions and accurately track medicines prescribed to your patients.

Additional Tips

  • The Prescriptions button on the toolbar changes, depending on whether the patient has prescriptions stored in Dentrix.
    • If the patient does not have any previous prescriptions, the button has an Rx symbol, and when clicked, displays a blank Patient Prescriptions dialog box.
    • If the patient has previous prescriptions stored in Dentrix, the button has an Rx symbol with a prescription bottle, and when clicked, displays all of the patient’s previous prescriptions in the Patient Prescriptions dialog box.
  • The Health History button is available within the Patient Prescriptions dialog box (in the upper-right corner), allowing you to check for drug allergies before you create a patient’s prescription. If the cross is white, the patient does not have any health history alerts; if the cross is red, click the button to check the patient’s health history alerts.
  • If you manually change any of the fields in the New Patient Prescription dialog box — for example, modifying the drug name, dispensing information, or number of refills — the prescription is considered a “non-standard” prescription and will appear with a checkmark in the Patient Prescriptions dialog box and have an asterisk (*) next to the date on the Prescriptions Report.
  • If you call in a prescription to a pharmacy instead of printing it, you can click the OK button instead of Print. However, a warning will display alerting you that you have not printed the prescription. Click Yes to print or No if you are calling in the prescription. A record of the prescription is saved in Dentrix, either way.
