    Posted: 12 June 2004 at 8:05pm

I am working in an office that has recently purchased Dentrix 4.0 and Shick Sensors.  They have had continuing problems trying to take xrays.  When taking an xray with the sensors they will sometimes get an image and then, seemingly out of the clear blue, they get a blank white image. There seemed to be no common thread to when the sensors  want to work and when they don't.  We had the technicians that work with schick come out yesterday and they replaced a part that has been known to be an issue in some offices causing this problem.  Once they did this it works perfectly in the Schick software.  It also works great in Dentrix until you change to a different size sensor.   This is a problem when taking FMX because they normally change sensors in the middle of the series.  Is this a known issue?  Is there any way to fix this?  We also purchased a ScanX and LOVE it.  The doctor really wants to use both.  He is a periodontist and the sensor is especially useful in surgery for implants, but when they have to change to a different sensor size there is a problem.  If you completely close out of dentrix and come back in the sensor works fine again until you change sensors again.  I hope someone has a solution.

TIA

Cindy,

When you are taking xrays with hard sensors inside the Image program, as soon as you select a specific sensor to use the program does what is called "Initializing the sensor."  That means that the program analyzes the sensor you have selected and makes sure that it is reading the correct information on that sensor.  That initializing takes place when you open the series you are going to take.  So, if you change sensors half way through a series, the program is only initialized on the first sensor you use and does not recognize the new sensor.

What you would have to do, is take all of the size two images first, then close the series, put in the new sensor size and reopen the series.  Doing this should cause the computer to re-initialize the sensor allowing you finish the series with the new size of sensor.

I was not aware of this.  Does this only happen when using Schick sensors with Dentrix or does it work the same with other sensors?

I am curious also, do you need to do this with Image Ray also?

Cindy,

I'm sure there must be a more techincal reply, but, in the meantime...can't they take all the x-rays they need with the size 2 sensor, then swith to take the remaining?  Usually a periodontist likes his anteriors with a smaller size...
